Behold Mozzarisella, A Vegan Cheese Coming To A Pizza Near You

For many people going vegan wouldn’t be so hard if it didn’t mean giving up cheese. I mean, how can you live without pizza? A company in the United Kingdom is hoping to solve that problem with Mozzarisella, a 100% vegan alternative to mozzarella cheese.

Produced from germinated Italian brown rice, Mozzarisella is lactose free, organic, GMO free. It is the brainchild of Alessandro Menegon, a vegan who comes from a long line of Italian cheese makers.

Menegon’s mozzarella-like vegan cheese actually melts and contains nutrients like fiber, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc and selenium. Its name is derived from mozzarella and riso, the Italian world for rice. It is meant to replace traditional mozzarella in dishes like pizza, Caprese salad and sandwiches.

So what does it taste like?

The Guardian’s Caroline Hamilton gave it a try and this is what she had to say: “No substitute will ever replace the flavour of the original, but there’s nothing starchy, powdery or synthetic here at all. Just a slight acidic note, a little like yoghurt and a mild sweet flavour. It doesn’t stretch exactly as expected, but you can’t have everything.”

Hamilton reports Menegon is producing more than 100,000 packages of Mozzarisella for distribution in Italy. The cheese is available in the United Kingdom and will be sold across Europe in the near future. In the meantime, Menegon is working on producing three different varieties of cheese.
