Bonhams to auction rare and Japanese whiskies in Hong Kong

The recent announcement that Bonhams is to present an auction to commemorate 400 years since the “first-ever Japanese sale in London” in December 2014 is timely – on 15 August the same auction house puts on a Japanese & Rare Whisky sale.

Though without the extensive heritage and tradition of Scottish whisky, the Japanese variant owes some of its origins to the expertise from Scotland, with early distillers keen to learn from the masters from northern Britain. This can be seen in the origins of the renowned Nikka Whisky company: in 1918, Masataka Taketsuru set off for Scotland in order to attend the University of Glasgow, in the process, according to Nikka, becoming “the first Japanese ever to study the art of whisky making”.
