Bubbleberries: The Fruit that Tastes Like Bubble Gum

Move over Willy Wonka. A fruit from the strawberry family that tastes like bubblegum and was popular in the 19th century has been resurrected in UK supermarkets. Bubbleberries, also known as fragaria Moschata or musk strawberries, are the most aromatic variety of strawberries, and also feature notes of pineapple, raspberry, and strawberry–a combination that tastes like good ole’ American bubblegum.

“They have a stronger flavor and more aroma compounds than any other kind of berry,” says Michael Wellik, a strawberry connossieur and owner of The Strawberry Store in Middletown, Delaware. “In the US, musk strawberries have been overlooked but those who have tasted them can never go back to alpine strawberries–the kind that are all over the country.”
