Ranking the World’s Best Champagnes

Armand de Brignac Champagne has been honored by critical acclaim from wine critics worldwide – including a rating as the world’s No. 1 Champagne in a now-famous blind tasting of 1,000 brands. Glowing reviews of our Champagne are always exciting to see, however, and this week’s feature on the brand from UK wine critic Ewan Lacey – familiar to many as the wine expert from Channel 4’s Cookery School, is no exception. Mr. Lacey visited our Chateau in Chigny-les-Roses, France, touring our cellars and meeting with our winemakers, Jean-Jacques Cattier and his son Alexandre. Mr. Lacey had the following to say about Armand de Brignac’s cuvées:

“Excellence isn’t easy to achieve and they’ve done it….The small scale of the production allows (the Cattiers) to hone their art, like a poet working relentlessly on a poem. And that’s what these wines ultimately are, they’re poetic. Subtle, beautiful, and with the power, as Ted Hughes once wrote, to hit you like a 10,000 volt shock.

“(Armand de Brignac Brut Gold) offers instant refreshment that builds to a crescendo of well-developed fruit and berry flavors…Beautiful acidity, perfectly balanced by well rounded fruit, amazing poise, full marks.

“(Armand de Brignac Blanc de Blancs is) spectacular in the most seamless way…an explosion of freshness and vivacity…then enters into another dimension as the fruit flavors begin to develop (into) a very rich wine full of berry flavors (and) soft fruit – apricots and peach….the wine is incredibly moreish. One sip demands another….I’ve never before encountered such a harmony of the rich with the refreshing…the full and the clean.

“To finish, we tasted the Rosé: beautiful and pale…Amazing refreshment once again with strawberry and blackcurrant fruit filling the palate; here is a wine both full bodied and ethereal and it sums up the amazing job that has been pulled off in making these wines. It’s another example that’s at the head of the class.

“I treated some friends at home to a small blind tasting….when I served (Armand de Brignac)…there was a hush and then one of my friends (said) ‘This is special’…and he was right.”
