Scientists Discover New Strawberry Species

Scientists in Oregon have discovered a new strain of wild strawberry that grows at around 3,000 to 5,000 feet above sea level.

It was discovered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture scientist Kim Hummer who found the new species during an expedition in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon.

Hummer named the variety Fragaria cascadensis after the area in which the fruit was discovered. Although this new discovery doesn’t bring about a new flavor of strawberry Hummer says that the potential for the discovery could be very positive.

The scientists hopes that crossing Cascade strawberry with other strains could lead to a new flavors of and disease resident strains.

For now Hummer and her team will work on crossing the new find with other varieties hoping to report on some more interesting discoveries in the future.
