Substitute It! Our Guide to Pantry Alternatives

Ever started whipping up a recipe only to discover you didn’t have an item or two on the list? Don’t fret. We have a list of pantry substitutes you can turn to when you haven’t made a trip to the grocery store:

SOUR CREAM = plain yogurt

RED WINE = grape juice, cranberry juice, beef stock, or tomato juice

WHITE WINE = apple juice, white grape juice, apple cider, or chicken stock

BUTTERMILK = 1 tablespoon white vinegar or lemon juice + milk to make 1 cup

BREADCRUMBS = ground crackers, corn flakes, or oats

CAKE FLOUR = 7 parts all-purpose flour + 1 part cornstarch

1 TABLESPOON FRESH HERBS = 1/3 to 1/2 teaspoon dried herbs

1 CLOVE GARLIC = 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

1 CUP FRESH MILK = 1/2 cup evaporated milk + 1/2 cup water

1 CUP SELF-RAISING FLOUR = 1 cup minus 2 teaspoons all-purpose flour + 11/2 teaspoons baking powder + 1/2 teaspoon salt

1 TEASPOON LEMON JUICE = 1/2 teaspoon vinegar

1/2 CUP TOMATO PASTE = 1 cup tomato sauce cooked, uncovered, until reduced to 1/2 cup
